Researchers from Columbia University and the City College of New York published a report recently. Their findings reported in this week’s American Journal of Preventive Medicine, were based on a national health survey of 3.5 million American adults. It suggests that, from 1993 to 2008, the proportion of smokers fell by 18.5 percent, while the proportion of obese people rose by 85 percent. Smoking caused more deaths, but obesity caused more illness.

I was reading an article this morning that pointed out some very sobering statistics about the state or America financially. We are at the close of what may be by most to be one of the worst years in the History of America. As this year of the Great Recession ends, we know that it has left economic scars that will take years to heal. The Unemployment rate in America has Surpassed 10 percent, and is higher than 12 percent in the great state of California and even higher to an astounding number of 15 percent in battle scarred Michigan. A recent study from the Department of Agriculture pointed out that approximately 50 million Americans struggled at some point in 2008 to get enough to eat.
With more than 40 million American citizens now officially living in poverty it is hardly surprising to know how little income it takes to not be considered poor by the federal government. For 2008, the poverty threshold for a single person under age 65 was an income of $11,201, or less than $1,000 a month. For a family of four, the threshold was $21,834. For a family of six, $28,769, (that’s less than $400/person/month).
Recent Data from the IRS gathered using Income taxes from 2008 shows that an income of $32,879 (less than $3000/month) or more puts you in the top half of taxpayers. Earning a bit more than twice that much — $66,532 ($5541/month)– earns you a spot among the top 25 percent of all earners. You crack the elite top 10 percent if you earn more than $113,018 (less than 10000/month). And $410,096 buys top bragging rights: Earn that much or more and you’re among the top 1 percent of all American earners.
